1730s Pocahontas by Mary Woodbury (1716-1747) of Beverly, Massachusetts at The Massachusetts Historical Society
Information from Philippe Halbert on November 23, 2018, in Boston. "White femininity and indigenous identity collide in this 1730s oil on paper portrait of Pocahontas by Mary Woodbury (1716-1747). A native of Beverly, Massachusetts, Woodbury is believed to have completed the portrait as a teenager at one of Boston’s colonial girls’ schools. Although anachronistic and idealized don’t even begin to describe this image, it survives today as the earliest known American depiction of Pocahontas and likely the first made by a female artist."
